Early Life and Education
Ayabonga Khaka was born in Middledrift, a place next to Alice that is located in the eastern Cape on July 18, 1992, she played cricket on the roads of the township when she was younger. Her first encounter with cricket was at Ingwenya Primary School which was when she was in grade 1. And only just as a 7-year-old, she had already been placed in a mini cricket camp for boys, which by the way, was the only girl in the team. Khaka was a batting right-hand but shorts into mini cos she hated getting hit on the head by the ball. She enjoyed getting boys out and understood the respect that the game of cricket required.
After enjoying playing mini cricket till the age of 14, she had fewer choices and was unaware of the sphere of women’s cricket. She procured Ntabenkonyana Senior Secondary School afterwards and cricket was not played extensively there. For this reason, she stopped playing cricket and played soccer instead for one year. In grade 9, she took up cricket again, this time joining the Middledrift Women’s Cricket Club. At this point, she received a call-up to the Border Under 19 girls’ team but was also playing for the senior provincial side.

Ultimately, Khaka had to decide on either soccer or cricket. She opted for cricket as it brought more joy to her. There were opportunities for her when she was playing at Middledrift Women’s Cricket Club. In 2009, she made it to the national Under 19 team for the first time.
